The Abruzzo Territory in the Genevitis Project

Between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennines, Abruzzo is one of Italy’s most representative winegrowing areas. Here, the Genevitis project enhances an agricultural tradition deeply rooted in the territory through a structured cooperative supply chain.

The Territory

The Abruzzo landscape is defined by a direct relationship between mountains and sea. The tratturi, ancient routes shaped by time and nature, once connected the inland areas to the coast and were travelled with eyes turned towards the sky, as if light and earth spoke the same language.

This bond between environment, community and agricultural tradition is an integral part of the local culture and is also reflected in its winemaking production.

Founded in 1960, Cantina Tollo has deep roots in Abruzzo viticulture and has contributed to the region’s winemaking development.

With around 13 million bottles produced every year from 2,500 hectares of vineyards cultivated by 620 members, it represents one of Italy’s most important wine producers.

The company exports 35% of its production to European Union countries, North America and the Far East. It was among the first in Italy to obtain European quality certification and has been committed to organic viticulture since the 1990s, with 237 hectares converted to organic farming.

Mission

The collaboration enhances the region’s ampelographic heritage, also through the recovery of native grape varieties such as Pecorino and Cococciola.

The project aims to preserve the connection between territory and agricultural production, maintaining continuity and quality over time.

Within the Genevitis project, Abruzzo’s winemaking identity takes shape in the Chiore line. The name, from the ancient local dialect, means “clear” and “luminous” and evokes a path guided by light, a symbol of the relationship between landscape, people and agricultural tradition.

A brand that tells the story of ancient peoples who, along the tratturi, let themselves be guided by the sun and the movement of the stars, ideally connecting mountains and sea.
